“The Book of Mormon” is a multifaceted tool in the exploration of modernizing religion. The ideas that are explored include ties between religion and identity, and acceptance – of both diversity of lifestyle and diversity of religion. This musical piece also explores the effects of satirical and comedic approaches to religion in theatre and the effect that that application has on the discussion surrounding religious theology.

Like many, Elder Price, one of the main characters of the show finds himself questioning his identity as both an individual and as a member of his religious community. Throughout the events that occur, Elder Price battles with his faith as something that defines him as a person.

The pinnacle of this moment of self discovery is demonstrated in the song "I believe". Although this musical discusses theology in an unconventional manner, using irony, and often brash comedy to discuss religion the musical (and the song "I Believe") demonstrates the ability ot question and create new interpretations of religous scripture. It also establishes the point of religion being a point of identity for many people.

Often the ability to believe in the extraordinary is one of the hardest challeges that people face when asked about their belief in a religion, this musical demonstrates that belief there is a duality between personal identity and religous identity.

Looking at the modernization of popular culture, individualism has become more apparant in social cultures and in religous cultures. The result has been a broader adaptation of what it means to be a memeber of a religous communtiy, and each person displays their identity in their own unique way.

Another important aspect of this musical that has been touched on briefly is the use of comedy and irony. Althoug this is far from the "regular" kind of religous sermon that is usually experienced, the musical acts as a topic of debate. Creating a launchpad for debates about the ins and outs of religious community, and about acceptance within the church, The Book of Mormon questions everything from the acceptance of LGBT members of society into the curch community (i.e."Turn it off", a hyperbolic song from the musical), to the acceptance of scripture as a concrete and non-adaptable set of rules.

Even though The Book of Mormon may not stay within the prescribed peramaters of talking about Mormonism, since its release The Church of the Latterday Saints has adopted The Book of Mormon as a tool to reach out to the masses, and answer questions about faith.

"And yet, at a time when more and more artists seem to entirely avoid difficult topics for fear of being shot down by the online outrage machine,The Book of Mormon seems more daring and refreshing now than it did even four years ago at its premiere. Somehow creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have found the sweet spot in their reflection on the evils of the world – a comfortable seat somewhere between outrageous and outraged."

I Believe

Ever since I was a child I tried to be the best
So, what happened?
My family and friends all said I was blessed
So, what happened?
It was supposed to be all so exciting to be teaching of Christ 'cross the sea,
But, I allowed my faith to be shaken.
Oh, what's the matter with me?

I've always longed to help the needy
To do the things I never dared.
This was the time for me to step up
So, then, why was I so scared?

A warlord who shoots people in the face.
What's so scary about that?
I must trust that my Lord is mightier
And always has my back.
Now I must be completely devout
I can't have even one shred of doubt...

I believe that the Lord, God, created the universe.
I believe that He sent His only Son to die for my sins.
And I believe that ancient Jews built boats and sailed to America
I am a Mormon,
And a Mormon just believes.

You cannot just believe part way,
You have to believe in it all.
My problem was doubting the Lord's will
Instead of standing tall.

I can't allow myself to have any doubt.
It's time to set my worries free.
Time to show the world what Elder Price is about!
And share the power inside of me...

I believe that God has a plan for all of us.
I believe that plan involves me getting my own planet.
And I believe; that the current President of The Church, Thomas Monson, speaks directly to God.
I am A Mormon,
And, dang it! a Mormon just believes!

I know that I must go and do
The things my God commands.
I realize now why He sent me here.

If You ask the Lord in faith,
He will always answer you.
Just believe in Him
And have no fear!

I believe that Satan has a hold of you
I believe that the Lord, God, has sent me here
And I believe that in 1978, God changed his mind about black people!
You can be a Mormon..
A Mormon who just believes!

And now I can feel the excitement.
This is the moment I was born to do.
And I feel so incredible
To be sharing my faith with you.

The Scriptures say that if you ask in faith,
If you ask God Himself he'll know.
But you must ask Him without any doubt
And let your spirit grow...

I believe that God lives on a planet called Kolob.
I believe that Jesus has his own planet as well.
And I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri.
If you believe, the Lord will reveal it.
And you'll know it's all true. You'll just feel it.
You'll be a Mormon
And, by gosh!
A Mormon just believes!
Oh, I believe.
I believe.
